SIX NEW AREAS TO BE SUBJECT TO SELECTIVE LICENSE
️ The Six Selective Licensing Areas
These areas were formally designated by Wirral Council in June 2025 and are set to come into effect on 1 October 2025, running through 30 September 2030
Birkenhead Central
A former designation area being reinstated under the new scheme
Egremont South
An existing selective‑licensing area under the 2020–2025 scheme, carried forward into the next phase
Hamilton Square B
Reintroduced to part of a previously licensed area (formerly Hamilton Square) under the new scheme
Lower Tranmere
A completely new area not previously covered by licensing
Tranmere North
Another new area added as part of this round of designations
Tranmere Lairds
Also an existing area under the previous scheme, carried forward into the new one
⭐ What are the reasons given for these areas being chosen –
Identified through data from Wirral’s Public Health Intelligence Team:
- Higher proportion of private rented housing
- Poorer overall property condition compared to the borough average
- Low housing demand in these neighbourhoods
Objective: ensure landlords in these areas maintain minimum property and tenancy standards via licensing conditions and inspections
Timeline
Statutory designation made on 24 June 2025 → goes live 1 October 2025 for a five‑year term
